Like most parts of Bangladesh, Phulbari is a Muslim-dominated area, but Hindus were the majority until British rule. The vehicles of that time were bullock carts and boats. Boats were the only means of long-distance travel, and for that reason, market-markets and villages were built on the banks of the river. People of the area used to travel through Phulbari railway station when railway communication was established in 1886 and continues to do so. After that, due to the establishment of road connectivity, vehicles from Dinajpur, Thakurgaon, Panchagarh districts, including the capital Dhaka, Bogra, Rajshahi, Khulna, Sylhet, Chittagong and other long-distance vehicles travel through this Phulbari city. In terms of communication, Phulbari town is of utmost importance in Dinajpur district. From the beginning of the 20th century, the activities of trade, commerce, shops, education and culture etc. continued to increase and reached the present state.
